Unlocking the Potential of DERS to Enhance Grid Flexibility
EW Flex is a suite of SDKs for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) into energy markets and demand flexibility programs.
EW Flex enables grid operators—including vertically integrated utilities, distribution system operators (DSOs), and transmission system operators (TSOs)—to scale processes for asset registration, pre-qualification, dispatch, and settlement to millions of distributed energy resources (DERs) via customer-facing applications and services.
This helps grid operators tap into the vast and growing pool of customer-owned and -sited assets, while enabling customers to improve the economics of DER ownership via increased participation in a variety wholesale energy markets and/or demand-side management programs.
EW Flex enables new market solutions that deliver a variety of technical, functional, and societal benefits, including:
LOW-COST ONBOARDING FOR DERS:
Empowers customers, field technicians, and grid operators to quickly and securely collect, verify, and reconcile DER data for establishing identity, permissions, and relationships among market participants.
Universal Data MANAGEMENT:
Decentralized digital identities (DIDs) help track and validate DER operational and relational data—from asset installation through years of market participation, preventing double-counting across multiple markets or portfolios and providing a common, validated view of DER data for all stakeholders.
AGNOSTIC, OPEN, INTEROPERABLE:
Compatible all types of DERs, from smart thermostats to storage systems, and communication protocols, with open APIs that support communication between DERs, market management platforms, and other systems (e.g., billing, DERMS).
DYNAMIC MARKET PARTICIPATION:
Modular architecture enables multiple market participants (e.g., TSO, DSO) to create market platforms for different products (e.g., ancillary services, capacity) that reference a common digital registry featuring all qualified DERs, with the possibility to dynamically bundle DERs based on various geographic or temporal criteria.
Spotlight: Austria, APAC, America
In Austria, TSO Austrian Power Grid's Flexhub application is underpinning a proof-of-concept solution for integrating customer-owned battery storage systems into the wholesale frequency regulation market, including registration, pre-qualification, activation, and settlement. In an Asia-Pacific market, EW Flex is being leveraged to improve the quality and quantity of DER data in a national registry while streamlining the process of sharing data among authorized stakeholders. In the U.S., EW Flex is being used to establish a distribution-level market that offers new ways for customers to monetize their DERs in addition to existing wholesale markets.
