EventHorizon 2018 is Approaching: What to Expect

By Energy Web Foundation on March 1, 2018

Next month will bring EventHorizon 2018, the second annual global summit on blockchain technology in the energy sector. Last year, more than 550 experts, innovators, and decision-makers from three-dozen countries came together in Vienna, Austria. It recently won “Best Tech Event” honors from Eventex’s 8th Global Event Awards.

This year, Event Horizon moves to Germany’s Kraftwerk Berlin, fittingly a former power station that dates to the 1960s. For three days spanning 17–19 April, the venue will come alive with the energy of the industry. One month out, Event Horizon 2018 is poised to dwarf its predecessor.

Event Horizon is shaping up to be the global must-attend event for energy blockchain, with a packed agenda and impressive industry cross-section of speakers.

Master of Ceremonies

Michael Casey, senior advisor for the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT’s Media Lab and senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management, will ‘host’ the event. A noted, U.S.-based blockchain expert, he is also the co-author of The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and the Blockchain are Challenging the Global Economic Order.

“The two most important challenges facing our age are that of climate change and economic inclusion,” explains Casey. “The blockchain is the only technology I’ve encountered that provides a platform upon which we can build solutions for both of those. Being at the center of a conference that brings these themes together is nothing short of exciting.”

– Named last year to a list of the top 25 adventurers of the past 25 years by Men’s Journal, polar explorer and environmental activist Sebastian Copeland will report from the front lines of climate change.
– Christoph Frei, secretary general and CEO of the World Energy Council and a Foundation Council member of the Energy Web Foundation, will speak to the future of decentralized energy.
– A solar industry veteran, cleantech investor, and lead independent trustee of energy think-and-do tank Rocky Mountain Institute, Tom Dinwoodie, will reflect on blockchain, climate change and prospects for limiting global warming to 1.5ºC.

An impressively credentialed set of 30+ speakers for panels and other sessions include

– Gavin Wood, founder of Parity and co-founder and former CTO of Ethereum
– Eva Kaili, member of the European Parliament and chair of its Science and Technology Options Assessment body
– Jeffrey Char, director of corporate venture capital at TEPCO
– Ramona Liberoff, COO of Innogy’s Innovation Hub
– Ewald Hesse, CEO and co-founder of Grid Singularity and Vice President of Energy Web Foundation
– Martin Frick, senior director for policy and programme coordination at UNFCC
– Sam Warburton, managing director and founder of Conjoule
– Benjamin Schott, director of business innovation at Sonnen GmbH

Agenda Highlights

EventHorizon’s sessions will cover topics such as transforming corporations and utilities, regulatory considerations, investment strategies, security, climate change and 100% renewables, energy access, plus deep dive tracks on use cases and business models, smart contracts, on- and off-chain governance, and other core topics for both corporates and developers.

Energy Web Foundation will have a strong presence, too, where we’ll be unveiling major milestones in our blockchain, Tobalaba test network, taskforce work, and more.
